Bots perform their jobs under a different user name than the owner, so that it is easy to tell them apart. Also, bot edits are hidden from pages like Special:Recentchanges to keep them from flooding the list. To see the bot edits click "show bot edits" at the top of Newest changes.

The most popular type of bot is called the Python Wikipedia Robot Framework or "pywikipediabot" for short.

Bot approvals

To get approved to run a bot, describe your bot below, create a new account for it, run some tests for a short time (a couple of days, a dozen edits), and get agreement from other users that the bot's use is a good idea. Once that is done, a formal request for a bot flag is made at meta:Requests for bot status.

There is unfortunately a huge backlog at meta. Usually bot requests are taken care of within 48 hours, but now it is taking longer. The bot bit for SieBot was set at meta on 22 August by Guillon[1]. Cheers! Siebrand 06:58, 30 августа 2007 (UTC)

The bot will contribute only if local potd doesn't exist. But I think we can make special kind of potd templates in the future, such as potd/2011-10-10 (commons). And bot will transfer potd there. Bot policy

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I'd like to implement the standard bot policy on this wiki. This will involve creating a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and adding a line at the top noting that it is used here. In particular, this policy allows automatic acceptance of known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests.

Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. Global bots

Hello. The standard bot policy was updated to allow global bots, which are now technically possible. These are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots (the local policy or request page must explicitly allow them, or they won't get access on this wiki). The current requirements for global bots are:

  • a global bot must only maintain interlanguage links or fix double-redirects;
  • a global bot must have already been active on several wikis, with long-term contributions demonstrating its trustworthiness.
